Start with Relaxed when building is the priority

Enshrouded's Relaxed preset reduces enemy numbers and increases resources and loot. Keen Games explicitly positions it for base-building and lighter adventuring. Start there if your main frustration is the work between construction projects, rather than immediately changing every custom value.

If you still enjoy the default combat, a Custom setup can separate gathering convenience from fighting difficulty. The 2026 Forging the Path update reorganised the preset overview while retaining individual customisation.

Two starting plans, not universal best settings

Solo builder

Try Relaxed first.

Spend a session on an actual project. If gathering now feels comfortable, resist changing more settings simply because they exist.

Explorer who enjoys combat

Start from default values in Custom.

Adjust the resource bottleneck you dislike while leaving combat familiar. You can then judge the economic change without also relearning enemy pressure.

Builder interrupted by normal enemies

Consider Pacified Enemies.

Keen's documentation says enemies then wait until attacked, but bosses are excluded. This is not a promise of a danger-free world.

First playthrough with no specific frustration

Default remains a useful baseline.

Learn which part of the routine bothers you before changing it. Custom settings are a tool for a problem, not required setup homework.

Change the setting connected to the time you want back

  • Mining EffectivenessThis affects mining damage and resource yield per hit, but also terraforming. If your complaint is slow excavation, it is more directly relevant than a general combat adjustment.
  • Resources Gain ModifierThis changes materials per loot stack, such as chest or enemy drops. It is not the same control as mining effectiveness.
  • Plant Growth SpeedThis changes growth speed. Consider it when waiting on crops interrupts the routine you actually want, not as a substitute for every other resource adjustment.
  • Enemy and boss settingsThe official configuration separates normal-enemy damage and health from boss modifiers. Read those distinctions before assuming a normal-enemy adjustment also changes a boss.

Treat difficulty as a world decision

Keen's documented workflow sets difficulty before hosting the world or starting the server; changes require restarting rather than adjusting the running session. On a dedicated server, individual values apply with the Custom preset selected.

For an established world, back up the relevant save and configuration before editing. Note your previous values and tell any other players what will change. Prefer a small, reversible adjustment over replacing the entire configuration with a downloaded preset you have not read.

Remove the delay you dislike, keep the challenge you enjoy

A useful test is concrete: build the room, gather the materials or explore the route that previously felt tedious. Ask whether the adjustment gave you more time for that activity without making the rest of the world feel empty.

For solo building, Relaxed is the clearest first experiment. For a group that still enjoys combat, make resource changes separately and agree on them together. A world where one player quietly removes everyone else's preferred challenge is not a well-tuned shared world.
